Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities Project

Good Neighbors Tanzania (GNTZ) was registered and officially started its operations in Tanzania in 2005 and has offices in Dar es Salaam (Head Office) and Mwanza, Dodoma and Shinyanga (Area Offices).
Good Neighbors Tanzania (GNTZ) invites suitably qualified and competent Tanzanian applicants to fill the following vacant posts at its Dodoma Area Office as hereunder indicated:

I.    Position Information
1)    Title: Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities Project Agricultural Officer (1 post)
2)    Department: Operation
3)    Reporting line: Operation Manager
4)    Duty location: Dodoma Area Office


Objective:

To provide farmer capacity building, carry out research and provide technical expertise on enhanced and more efficient farming, agro-processing, harvesting and storage methods for improving agricultural productivity in drought prone areas, specifically for the Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities Project in Chamwino District, Dodoma, Tanzania.

Project Background:

The Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities project is a World Food Programme pilot project implemented by Good Neighbors International and regional government authorities, and funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea. The project has started the implementation in Chamwino District (Fufu, Suli and Chiboli villages), Dodoma region, Tanzania, from year 2014.

Supervision:

The Agricultural Officer will be supervised by the Good Neighbors Tanzania Country Director in Dar es Salaam and Managing Directors in Dodoma and Mwanza, and work in close collaboration with the operations, administration and project teams in Good Neighbors Tanzania. Direct work performance evaluation will be by the GNTZ Managing Director in Dodoma Office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1)    Farmer Capacity Building on Improved Farming Methods in Drought Prone Areas
•    Liaise with local, national and international agricultural experts to organize appropriate and relevant farmer training and practical sessions for the benefit of farmer communities in Fufu, Suli and Chiboli villages.
•    Responsible for organizing capacity building sessions and training community members and farmers on drought resistant farming methodology suitable for terrain and climate in Chamwino District, Dodoma Tanzania, especially with regard to use of improved seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and methods for ploughing, seeding, tilling, irrigation and harvesting crops.
•    Responsible for preparation and documentation of all farmer training sessions: agenda, training materials, recommendations, minutes, etc.
•    Generate ideas and proposals on methods to bring about increased engagement of farmers in project areas in improved farming methods, and encourage farmer and community participation in GNTZ training sessions aimed at agricultural productivity in Chamwino District.
•    Provide consultation and answer queries on agriculture and farming related issues from project target communities.
•    Expected to carry out periodic site visits to different farms in the project area and in Chamwino District, to carry out assessments of farmer capacity and understanding of agricultural methodologies, and to learn new means of tackling problems unique to the area.
•    Prepare monthly reports on the status of farming methods, and community understanding on the use of improved agricultural techniques.

2)    Technical Advice on Improved Farming Methods in Drought Prone Areas
•    Provide GNTZ Management and Staff Members on technical advice and expertise on improved and innovative farming methods and technology, especially for drought prone areas, and keep Management informed on new ideas, products and methods available in the market.
•    Responsible for providing advice, developing methods and technical training to GNTZ Management and Saemaul farmers on increasing crop productivity for the following: sorghum, millet, maize, sesame and sunflower production, and also on improved horticultural methods (small scale) in drought prone areas to be carried out in community vegetable plots - technical expertise to reflect Chamwino District’s drought prone climate and agricultural terrain.

3)    Propositions for Improved Crop Harvesting, Storage and Agro-Processing Methods
•    Generate ideas, prepare proposals and carry out implementation for methods to increase efficiency in agro-processing methods, crop harvesting and crop storage methods
•    Develop improved agro-linkages for farmers to the market system, and enhance marketability of project area’s agricultural products

4)    Research on Agricultural Policies, Trends and Farming Methodology
•    Provide GNTZ Management with updated information on recent agricultural policies, trends and farming methodology, at the national and international level – especially those that can link with agricultural productivity and farming methodology in Chamwino District.
•    Help to make farming sustainable, safe, and environmentally friendly. Analyze agricultural operations in Chamwino District and weigh the use of new technologies and methods to increase yields, improve land use, and conserve resources like seed, water, fertilizers, pesticides and fuel

Competencies, Qualifications and Experience:

•    Master’s Degree/Bachelor in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics or other related fields.
•    Good and informed knowledge of agricultural sector issues and policies, both in Tanzania and in the international field
•    Minimum  3-4 years work experience as an agricultural expert / consultant
•    Experience in training and capacity building of rural community members and farmers in rural Tanzania
•    Excellent analytical and drafting skills
•    Experience in agricultural research and pilot programmes
•    Fluent in spoken and written English and Kiswahili
•    Excellent skills in use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
•    Ability to work in an international and multi-national environment
•    Religious and cultural tolerance
•    Interest in community and rural development
•    Commitment to abide by Good Neighbors Tanzania Staff Terms and Regulations


Contract Period:

•    The Employment Contract will be for a period of 12 months, with possibility of contract extension (negotiable).
•    Contract extension will depend on the candidate’s satisfactory performance as Agricultural Officer and his/her appropriate code of conduct in the office.
•    This is a full time position based in Dodoma town, Tanzania, with frequent visits to the project site (Fufu, Suli and Chiboli villages in Chamwino District).

Objective

Implementation of Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities project activities through documentation of programs and processes; implementation of project activities and community mobilization, facilitation and training of community based committees, and evaluating program/activity effectiveness.

Duties and Responsibilities

1)    Health Improvement and Nutrition Campaigns
•    Focal person for communication and coordination of activities with District Health Department.
•    Mobilization of community involvement in Health improvement
•    Organizing Nutrition trainings and campaigns to all dispensaries in all three villages
•    Monitoring community participation in Health improvement and nutrition training
•    Implement health-related activities in coordination with District Health Department and Village Dispensaries
 
2)    WASH and Training & Campaign
•    To increase awareness of water sanitation, hygiene and SZHC communities
•    Organize and implement WASH trainings in all three villages
•     To create network with other WASH and nutrition stakeholders

3)    Youth Development Committee, Water Committee, Village Development Committee
•    To establish, facilitate and train development committees in each village
•    Help communities realize their problems in their community and find the solutions to those problems
•    To prepare committee developments trainings to all respective villages
•    Organize and mobilize community contribution for community development

4)    Community Centre and Warehouse Construction
•    To organize community mobilization in participating on construction work
•     Monitoring the Community participation and supervision of construction work together with Programme Manager.

5)    Food for Asset
•    Monitoring of food allocation and distribution in construction of charcoal dams and other related activities in food for works. To perform any other related duties as required

Competencies and Qualification

•    Degree/ Advance Diploma in Community Development, Sociology or any related course
•    Minimum of 3-4 years work experience in community development, being stick in   one organization for almost 3 years.
•    Ability and willingness to travel to project sites frequently and sometime sleeping in project sites
•    Interest in community and rural development
•    Fluency in both English and Kiswahili
•    Excellent skills in use of Microsoft Excel and MS word
•    Ability to work in an international and multi-national environment

•     Ability to work independently and under pressure

III.    Position Information
1)    Income Generation Officer (1 Post)
2)    Reports to: Operation Manager
3)    Location: Dodoma

Objective

The Income Generation Officer is to operate and develop Income Generation Project, training and consulting community.

Duties and Responsibilities

•    Conduct business and financial literacy/management training for Income Generation program participants.
•    Organize, conduct, and facilitate trainings and workshops for Income-Generation participant
   groups.
•    Develop and foster networks with other Income-Generation Projects both locally and nationally in order to identify effective approaches.
•    Partner with project groups to effectively plan, implement, and monitor Income Generation activities
•    Secure funding and resources (e.g. facilities, people) for Income Generation activities through
   fundraising, sponsorships, and interested investors.
•    Create, develop, and enact new income generation projects that enable Income Generation groups to be (come) self-reliant.
•    Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation
•    Write proposal and required reports
•    Performs other related duties required

Skills and Experience

•    Project development and business skills.
•    Experience in the development and operations of income developing projects.
•    Ability of managing finances (budget and expenditure) for small and large projects.
•    Driven and proactive approach to work.
•    Ability to work on deadlines/targets independently and within a team environment.

Qualification and experience

•    At least three/four (3-4) years of experience in Community Development projects.
•    A Degree in Community Development, Community Economics, Economics, Business Administration or related field.
•    An excellent written and oral command of English
•    Knowledge on Project Cycle Management, Humanitarian Principles, Cultural awareness (Cross cultural working, Inter-personal skills, dealing with local authorities, common ethical dilemmas)
•    Excellent communication skills
•    Knowledge of Microsoft Office
•    Must be energetic and passionate hard-working person with willingness to learn and grow

IV.    Position Information 
           Volunteer

Objective

To provide Support to Saemaul Zero Hunger Community project especially to Administration Division to make sure all operation are run smoothly and meet deadline.

Project Background

The Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities project is a World Food Programme pilot project implemented by Good Neighbors International and Chamwino District Council, and funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea. The project will start implementation in Chamwino District (Fufu, Suli and Chiboli villages), Dodoma region, Tanzania by early 2014.

Supervision

The Volunteer will be supervised by the Good Neighbors Tanzania Administrative Manager, Country Director in Dar es Salaam and Managing Directors in Dodoma, and work in close collaboration with the administration division and project teams in Good Neighbors Tanzania. Direct work performance evaluation will be by the GNTZ Managing Director in Dodoma Office.

Duties and Responsibilities

•    Assist Getting invoice/ quotations for all office supplies
•    Assist Purchase of office supplies (stationeries, cleaning materials, drinking water)
•    Assist to Keep track of all office inventories
•    Payment of office LUKU and Water bill monthly
•    Monthly Airtime recharge for MD and Programme officer
•    Make follow ups on final spending and deposits from the responsible staff
•    Assist in Checking all the AD and OD files if there is any necessary document missing.
•    Assist Photocopying AD and OD files
•    Provide other assistant to Accountant
•    Perform any other duties as assigned by AD Manager.


Competencies and Qualification

•    Degree/ Advance Diploma in Business Administration, Finance or Accounting
•    Fluency in both English and Kiswahili
•    Excellent skills in use of Microsoft Office and Accounting Package especially Quick book
•    Religious and cultural tolerance
•    Ability to work independently and under pressure
